Lake Kivu is Africa's sixth largest lake, stretching 90 km along Rwanda's western border with the DRC. The lakeside road from Rubavu in the north to Rusizi in the south is one of the continent's most scenic drives -- 227 km of hairpin turns, fishing villages, tea plantations, and volcanic hot springs. A rental car is the best way to experience it.

157 km, 3 hrs. Fully tarmacked RN4 via Musanze. Smooth two-lane highway through terraced hills and eucalyptus forests. Any vehicle type works.
105 km, 3-4 hrs. The most scenic stretch. Mostly tarmacked but with unpaved sections near Nkora and steep switchbacks. A 4x4 provides extra confidence, especially after rain.
122 km, 3-4 hrs. Passes through Nyamasheke district with lake views and tea estates. Road quality varies -- tarmac sections alternate with gravel. 4x4 recommended.
233 km, 4-5 hrs. Fully tarmacked via Nyungwe Forest (RN6) and Huye. Optional stop at Nyungwe for chimpanzee tracking or the canopy walkway.

The quiet midpoint of the lake. Karongi has a sheltered bay dotted with green islands, a genocide memorial on a peninsula, and some of the best lakeside lodges. Excellent for a two-night stop.
Rwanda's southwestern corner. Visit Rusizi National Park for hippos and crocodiles in the Rusizi River delta, then cross to Bukavu (DRC) or continue east to Nyungwe Forest.
The hills above Nyamasheke and Karongi are blanketed with tea estates. Several offer guided tours and tastings. The geometric patterns of manicured tea bushes against the lake backdrop are unforgettable.
Volcanic hot springs appear at several points along the shore, most accessibly near Gisenyi in the north. The mineral-rich water ranges from warm to scalding -- locals will show you the safe spots.
Dozens of small fishing communities line the shore. Stop to watch the sambaza (sardine) catch come in at dawn, buy smoked fish, or arrange a boat ride to one of the lake's 15 islands.
Pick up your rental car and drive north via Musanze (3 hrs). Arrive in Rubavu by early afternoon. Swim at Gisenyi beach, visit the hot springs, and watch the sunset over the lake from the waterfront.
The highlight of the circuit. Leave early for the 3-4 hour drive south along the lakeshore. Stop at fishing villages, buy roasted maize from roadside vendors, and photograph the endless panorama. Check into a Karongi lodge on the bay.
Take a boat to Napoleon Island to see one of Central Africa's largest fruit bat colonies. Afternoon visit to a tea plantation in the hills above town. Kayaking and paddleboarding available at several lodges. This rest day lets you absorb the pace of lakeside life.
Continue south through tea estates and hillside villages (3-4 hrs). Arrive in Rusizi (Kamembe) and visit Rusizi National Park for a sunset boat safari among hippos and waterbirds in the river delta.
Drive east through Nyungwe Forest National Park (1.5 hrs to the park). Optional stop for the canopy walkway or a short nature hike. Continue through Huye and back to Kigali (total 5 hrs driving). Drop the car at your hotel or the airport.
