Car Rental Huye

Huye -- known as Butare until 2006 -- is Rwanda's intellectual capital, home to the country's oldest university and its finest museum. Sitting at 1,768 metres on the southern plateau, it is the natural base for exploring the National Museum, the royal heritage of nearby Nyanza, and the ancient rainforests of Nyungwe two hours further west.

University Town Atmosphere

The University of Rwanda's Huye campus gives the town a youthful energy uncommon outside Kigali. Good restaurants, lively cafes, and a walkable centre make Huye a pleasant overnight stop on any southern road trip.

FAQ

Car Rental Huye — FAQ

Yes. The RN1 highway from Kigali to Huye is fully tarmacked and well-maintained. It is one of Rwanda's best roads. Any vehicle type, including a standard sedan or RAV4, handles it without difficulty. The road passes through Muhanga, Ruhango, and Nyanza with good fuel stations along the way.

The RN6 from Huye to the Nyungwe Forest entrance is tarmacked. However, roads within the park to trailheads like Uwinka (canopy walkway) are unpaved, steep, and can be slippery after rain. A 4x4 is recommended if you plan to drive inside the park. If you only visit the entrance-side trails, a RAV4 may suffice in dry season.

Yes, and we strongly recommend it. Nyanza is 30 km north of Huye, directly on the RN1 highway. The King's Palace is a short detour from the main road. Allow 1-1.5 hours for the visit. The reconstructed royal compound and the ceremonial Inyambo cattle are highlights of any southern Rwanda trip.

Huye is worth at least a half-day stop. The National Museum of Rwanda is the country's best museum, and the university-town atmosphere offers a different side of Rwanda from Kigali or the national parks. The coffee scene is emerging, with several specialty cafes and farm tours. Most travellers spend one night in Huye before continuing to Nyungwe.

Yes. We deliver rental cars to any hotel in Huye for a one-way fee of $40 from Kigali. One-way rentals are also available -- pick up in Huye and drop off in Kigali, or vice versa. Call +250 788 439 022 to arrange. Alternatively, pick up in Kigali and enjoy the scenic drive south.

Yes, but it makes for a long day. Nyungwe is 2 hours each way from Huye. Chimpanzee tracking starts at 05:00, so you would need to leave Huye by 03:00 -- most travellers prefer staying overnight near the park. The canopy walkway is more practical as a day trip since it operates throughout the morning and requires less travel time to the Uwinka trailhead.
