Itinerary

3-Day Lake Kivu Beach Break

Day 1 — Kigali to Rubavu

Depart Kigali in the morning and drive via Musanze (3 hrs). Stop for lunch in Musanze, then continue west through the Virunga foothills to Rubavu. Check into a lakeside hotel and spend the evening on Gisenyi beach watching the sunset over the lake.

Day 2 — Beach Day & Hot Springs

Morning visit to the Gisenyi hot springs along the lakeshore. Spend the afternoon swimming and relaxing on the beach. Optional: take a boat tour on Lake Kivu to learn about the methane gas reserves, or drive north to explore the Congo Nile Trail starting section. Evening seafood dinner at a waterfront restaurant.

Day 3 — Coffee Trail & Return

Morning coffee-farm tour in the hills above Rubavu. Drive back to Kigali via the southern route through Karongi for different scenery, or return via Musanze to add a stop at Musanze Caves or Buhanga Eco-Park. Drop the car at your Kigali hotel or the airport.

Both routes take roughly 3 hours. The northern route via Musanze is slightly longer but lets you combine with gorilla trekking. The southern route via Muhanga gives you more Lake Kivu scenery. Both are fully tarmacked. We recommend going one way and returning the other for variety.

Standard rental agreements do not cover crossing into the DRC. If you plan a Goma day trip, we can arrange a cross-border rental with the required additional insurance and documentation. Rubavu is very safe. Rwanda consistently ranks as one of Africa's safest countries. The lakeside area is well-patrolled, and locals are welcoming. Normal precautions apply -- lock your car and don't leave valuables visible. The Congo border area is orderly on the Rwanda side.

Yes. Rubavu has multiple fuel stations (SP, Kobil, Engen) along the main road through town. Fuel prices are government-regulated and the same as Kigali. If driving south along the lake toward Karongi, fill up in Rubavu first as stations become sparse.

Yes. Lake Kivu is bilharzia-free, unlike many African lakes, making it safe for swimming. The beaches around Gisenyi have warm, calm water year-round. The methane reserves are deep beneath the surface and pose no risk to swimmers.
