Why You Need a Reliable 4x4

Early Morning Departure

Gorilla trek briefings start at 7:00 AM at Kinigi. You need a vehicle that starts reliably in cold mountain mornings and navigates the steep roads to park HQ without hesitation.

Muddy Mountain Roads

Access roads to the trailheads can be muddy and rutted, especially in the rainy season. A proper 4x4 with good ground clearance is not optional -- it is essential.

Driver Recommended

A car with driver lets you focus on the experience. Your driver knows the roads, handles the early starts, and waits at the trailhead while you trek.

FAQ

Volcanoes NP Car Rental — FAQ

Yes, the road from Kigali to Musanze is excellent tarmac and easy to drive. The 15km from Musanze to Kinigi park HQ is narrower but paved. A 4x4 vehicle is recommended for the final stretch, especially in rainy season.

We recommend hiring a driver for gorilla trekking. The early morning start (5--6 AM departure from Musanze) is easier with a driver who knows the dark mountain roads. Your driver waits at the trailhead while you trek, and you can relax on the drive back.

There is a parking area at the Kinigi park headquarters where the trek briefing takes place. From there, you may need to drive to a separate trailhead depending on which gorilla family you are assigned. Your guides will direct you.

Gorilla trekking operates year-round. The dry seasons (June--September and December--February) have easier trail conditions and clearer skies. The wet seasons (March--May, October--November) see fewer visitors and slightly lower permit demand, but trails can be muddy and slippery.

Gorilla trekking permits cost $1,500 per person, set by the Rwanda Development Board (RDB). Book 3--6 months in advance through RDB or a licensed tour operator. Permits are non-refundable but can be rescheduled in some circumstances.

A minimum of 2 days (travel + trek day), but 3 days is ideal. This allows time to arrive in Musanze, do the gorilla trek, and add golden monkey tracking or a crater lake hike. Call +250 788 439 022 to plan your itinerary.
